How To Do Real-Time Animation in After Effects With The Puppet Tool – Step By Step Tutorial

In this video I show you how to animate a PNG or any other graphic using the puppet tool in Adobe After Effects in real time. The puppet tool allows you to control the movements of a graphic by adding position pins, which can then be moved to create animations.

I next show you how to create a new composition, add a PNG graphic and scale it down to fit the screen. Then I use the puppet position pen tool to add pins to the graphic, which I demonstrate can be animated in real-time by holding down the command or control key while moving the pins.

Next, I show you how to smooth out the animation using an expression in the mesh drop-down menu. The expression is created by clicking on the stopwatch while holding down the option or alt key and typing “smooth” within the expression.

Lastly, I explain that while this method is not ideal for creating perfectly symmetrical animations, it is a quick and easy way to create basic animations for explainer videos or other projects.
